About

Interactive Storytelling Ottawa is a meetup group for readers, writers, creators, gamers, practitioners and enthusiasts of Interactive Fiction in all its forms.

We interpret Interactive Fiction in a broad sense. Text-based adventures, non-linear literature, tabletop games, video games, MUDs, hypertext fiction, LARPs, Twitter fiction and visual novels can all be considered examples of interactive storytelling. Interactive Fiction can take place in digital space, in physical space, or somewhere in between. Interactive storytelling is also used in the nonfiction worlds of journalism and social commentary. And that is just the tip of the iceberg!

We are interested in how these various mediums pursue the same goals, and how we can use interactive storytelling for entertainment, education, activism, journalism, outreach, and more.

Most of all, we are interested in the art and craft of creating and appreciating stories with branching narratives. Branching narratives not only form the backbone of most modern entertainment software; they allow us insight into diverse experiences and interpretations of stories; they shed light on the nature and significance of choice and possibility; and they invite us to peer down the road of pathways not our own.

Interactive Fiction illuminates kaleidoscopically the relationship between author and reader, creator and player, entertainment and audience, individual and environment. And we think that’s pretty darn cool.
